Classes

Learn Traditional Blacksmithing

Classes at O’Keefe Historic ranch with Patrick McIvor begin at 9:30 in the morning and go till everyone in the class is finished their projects.

Each class starts with some discussion around what we are making, what skill sets are being reviewed and what new skills will be learned.

As most students have limited equipment and knowledge of blacksmith iron work, all lessons show how to create many objects using very basic tools and scrap materials.

The Process

The steps of the project are explained then demonstrated. After each section is explained step by step the students go to their stations and begin that section of the object.

We repeat these steps until we complete the project.

Students are asked to bring to class food and water for the day, safety glasses, good boots, non-flammable cloths like cotton or wool. In winter wearing layers is required as there is no heat in the forge, when demonstrations happen students can get cold and when working get hot.

Our lessons at O’Keefe are skill based, with challenging techniques to build quality traditional forging skills. The class is shown several different ways to accomplish the same result
